Solana Foundation says the network is secure against quantum threats
Key Summary
Solana Foundation Technical VP Jacob Creech says the network is secure against quantum threats and can upgrade its cryptography to handle quantum computing and AI-accelerated attacks. The foundation has been working on a quantum-resistant scheme and has a proof-of-concept that allows users to verify seed ownership and move to a quantum-resistant scheme. Despite concerns from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, Solana remains calm and has a solid plan in place to address the issue.

Overview
The quantum panic has reached Solana, and the Solana Foundation's answer is calm: nobody needs to head for the bunker. Background
Creech was responding directly to Ethereum researcher Justin Drake. Drake had warned that the crypto industry needs to prepare for a possible breach of ECDSA before 'q-day'. Q-day is the industry's shorthand for the moment quantum computers become capable enough to break today's widely used cryptography. ECDSA is one of the signature schemes that would be exposed when that happens.Solana's Approach
Creech's argument rests on Ed25519, the signature scheme Solana uses to authorize transactions. On Solana, signing keys are derived from a secret seed, and that seed is never exposed on-chain. If the underlying elliptic curve were compromised, only the derived key would be at risk, not the seed sitting behind it. Whoever holds the seed can prove they are the legitimate owner, even if an attacker managed to forge the derived key.Quantum-Resistant Scheme
A proof-of-concept that lets users verify seed ownership and move to a quantum-resistant scheme has been developed and open-sourced. This approach uses Winternitz signatures, which are hash-based and do not lean on the elliptic curve math quantum machines are expected to threaten.Testnets and Partnerships
Solana has been working on this for a while and has run post-quantum signature testnets, letting developers test the new cryptography without touching live user funds. Client teams Anza and Firedancer selected Falcon as their post-quantum signature scheme, which is aligned with standards from NIST, the US agency that has been steering the global shift toward quantum-resistant cryptography.#Solana#QuantumSecurity#US#Crypto
