Corporate Resistance Halts Stock Tokenization Plan

Key Summary

Intercontinental Exchange and OKX face significant resistance from major corporations regarding their new tokenized stock trading platform.

Key Bullets

  • Sixty-two publicly traded firms rejected the OKX and Intercontinental Exchange tokenization plans.
  • Corporate legal teams raised concerns over share price stability and trading liquidity.
  • Morgan Stanley deployed alternative tokenized US equities directly through the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation.

Corporate Resistance Halts Tokenization Plans

A total of 62 publicly traded firms rejected plans by OKX and the Intercontinental Exchange to tokenize their shares, according to reporting by journalist Eleanor Terrett. The latest corporate resistance came from aircraft maker Boeing, Amsterdam-based infrastructure provider Nebius, and software developer ServiceNow. Public regulatory filings and corporate statements confirm that six members of the dominant technology group known as the magnificent seven have refused inclusion.

The pushback follows a September regulatory move by the SEC introducing a temporary innovation exemption. That framework permitted platforms to offer secondary trading of tokenized US equities through liquidity pools and permissioned market makers. Issuers including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Coca-Cola, and Walmart filed immediate objections. Corporate legal teams cited severe concerns regarding share price stability, trading liquidity, and offshore exchange jurisdiction.

Execution Flaws Target Automated Markets

Industry executives questioned the technical viability of routing equity liquidity through automated market maker pools rather than traditional limit order books. Figure CEO Mike Cagney posted on social media that automated pools fail to match the execution quality demanded by large equity issuers. Corporate treasuries demanded native issuance directly from companies with built-in borrow and loan capabilities for DeFi protocols.

Morgan Stanley bypassed third-party venues entirely by deploying tokenized US equities and Treasuries directly through the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation. That network went live on October 28 with 34 securities backed 1-to-1 by assets held in institutional custody.

Regulatory Shifts Enable Tokenized Equities

Traditional equity markets operate within strict operating hours governed by complex intermarket linkage rules and centralized order books. Standard regulations require brokers to route customer orders through systems designed to prevent executions at inferior prices across competing venues. These established frameworks have kept equity trading tethered to daytime business hours for decades. Meanwhile, digital asset markets established continuous trading demand that forced traditional financial institutions to reconsider their operational constraints.

Regulators recently introduced temporary exemptions granting qualifying tokenized stock exchanges five years of conditional relief from standard registration frameworks. Issuers received opportunities to object to third-party token listings, resulting in pushback from sixteen major corporations including Microsoft and Alphabet. Tokenization providers must still acquire ordinary shares through registered broker-dealers to back digital receipts.
