Google Launches Private App Store for Personal Utility Apps

Key Summary

Google has introduced a new feature in Google AI Studio that allows users to build and deploy private Android apps on the Play Store. The apps are generated using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, and can be tested on an emulator or installed on a physical device. The personal library feature is initially available for users aged 18 and older in the US and select markets, with plans to expand to other regions and add features like limited sharing and public developer accounts.

Introduction

Google has announced that anyone can now publish privately listed, vibe-coded Android apps on the Play Store. The tool doing the heavy lifting is Google AI Studio, and the destination is a new feature called a personal library.

How the personal library works

You describe the app you want, AI generates it, and you publish it to a space only you can access. Apps published this way stay private. They will not show up in public search results or in the Play Store's recommendations.

What Google says is coming next

The current version is deliberately narrow. Over the coming months, Google plans to expand what these private apps can do.

The road from Google I/O

This did not come out of nowhere. Google unveiled its enhanced AI Studio capabilities at Google I/O in May 2026, and the personal library builds directly on that foundation.

What this means

The most interesting shift here is philosophical. App stores have long been built around the idea of one app serving many users, and Google is now openly making room for apps that serve exactly one.

The planned path to public developer accounts is where things get more consequential. That is the bridge between hobby and business, and the Trust & Safety reviews standing on it will matter a great deal.
