US Inflation Fuels $434M Weekly Outflows from Digital Asset Funds

Key Summary

CoinShares reports $434 million weekly outflows from digital asset funds as US inflation runs hot, marking a reversal from previous inflows and coinciding with a decline in Bitcoin and broader digital asset prices. The outflows follow a pair of US economic releases that came in hotter than expected: September inflation and retail sales.

Precedent & Market Context

The previous week's outflows from digital asset funds were $1.1 billion, according to CoinShares. This week's outflows of $434 million were a reversal from the previous week's inflows.

The Numbers That Spooked the Market

Start with inflation. The US Consumer Price Index for September rose 0.6% month-over-month and 3.7% year-over-year. The consensus forecast had called for 3.6% annually.

Gasoline did a lot of the heavy lifting. Fuel prices accounted for about half of the monthly increase.

Then came retail sales. Spending grew 0.8% month-over-month in September, well above the roughly 0.3% that forecasters anticipated.

What This Means for Investors

The first takeaway is that crypto's sensitivity to US macro data remains firmly intact. A single week of CPI and retail sales numbers was enough to flip fund flows from inflows to $434 million of outflows.

The second takeaway concerns the composition of the inflation increase. With gasoline responsible for about half the monthly rise, part of the pressure came from a volatile category that can swing back as quickly as it climbed. Strong retail spending, though, is harder to dismiss as noise, especially with August revised up to 1.3%.

For crypto markets, the near-term path likely depends on what the Fed signals at its October meeting. A steady hold, which Polymarket's odds favored at 75%, could calm nerves. A surprise hike, or hawkish language pointing toward one, could extend the risk-off mood.
