Core Scientific Shuts Down Bitcoin Mining for AI Infrastructure

Key Summary

Core Scientific announced plans to shutter its legacy Bitcoin mining operations entirely by the fourth quarter of 2026, pivoting exclusively toward high-density artificial intelligence colocation. According to Q3 2026 earnings disclosures presented by Chief Financial Officer Jim Nygaard, total quarterly revenue climbed to $233.00M while self-mining dropped to a nominal $12.30M. The firm reallocated all five active power campuses toward high-performance computing workloads to capture surging demand from partners like CoreWeave.

Key Bullets

  • Core Scientific generated $233.00M in total Q3 2026 revenue while confirming plans to completely exit Bitcoin mining before 2027.
  • Colocation revenue surged nearly 60% quarter-over-quarter to reach $215.40M due to rapid expansion in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
  • Self-mining operations dropped to $12.30M after the company recorded $266.50M in asset impairments earlier in the fiscal year.
  • Net income reached $1.18B for the third quarter following extensive operational restructuring and expanded capacity billing across 485 MW.

Core Scientific Abandons Bitcoin Mining

Core Scientific will terminate its legacy Bitcoin mining operations before December 2026, according to corporate earnings filings released Tuesday by the enterprise. Chief Financial Officer Jim Nygaard confirmed during the Q3 2026 earnings call that the firm will transition into a dedicated high-density colocation provider entering 2027.

Mining contributed a nominal fraction of total earnings as corporate power capacity shifted toward external high-performance workloads. Self-mining generated $12.30M in the third quarter while hosted mining brought in $5.17M. Equipment hosting agreements for external operators dropped to $5.20M following massive impairment charges recorded earlier in the fiscal year totaling $266.50M.

Colocation Revenue Surges to Records

Colocation revenue climbed 58% quarter-on-quarter to $215.40M in the third quarter, compared with $136.70M in the previous period and $15.00M a year earlier. Total quarterly revenue rose to $233.00M while adjusted EBITDA reached $133.60M, up from $41.10M.

The adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 57% as operating performance improved and additional capacity came online. Net income hit $1.18B for the period, reversing prior losses. Non-cash warrant fair-value adjustments heavily inflated that bottom-line net income figure.

Sector-Wide Shift Threatens Legacy Mining

By the end of September, the firm operated nearly 50% fewer miners than at the close of 2025. Meanwhile, it billed for 485 megawatts of active colocation capacity, marking an increase of 90 MW during the third quarter.

Riot and MARA are executing similar structural pivots toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Competition remains intense, and subsequent block reward halvings will make traditional proof-of-work mining far less lucrative for public firms.
