Arizona Sues TikTok Over Alleged Addiction and Mental Health Harms to Minors

Lawsuit Alleges Addiction and Mental Health Harms to Minors

The state of Arizona is suing TikTok, alleging that the app was built to get children and teens addicted while hiding the toll on their mental health. According to Attorney General Kris Mayes, TikTok's features such as infinite scrolling, auto-play, and push notifications are designed to keep minors engaged despite the app's marketing as a safe platform for young people.

The complaint alleges that TikTok downplayed or failed to disclose risks including depression, anxiety, disordered eating, and self-harm. It also claims that the company knowingly allows children under 13 on the app despite publicly claiming to bar them.

The state alleges that TikTok's recommendation algorithms expose minors to increasingly extreme, harmful, or age-inappropriate content and that the company's content moderation practices are inadequate to block much of the dangerous material on the platform.

In response, a TikTok spokesperson denies the allegations, stating that the lawsuit relies on misleading and inaccurate claims and ignores the company's concrete safety measures.
